Deep Blue Sea (1999)

There are 2 things that sharks do in life: swim and eat. That's it, right? Well, you'll have a different opinion of them after you have watched DEEP BLUE SEA, a water soaked thrill ride from Renny Harlin (CLIFFHANGER). A group of scientists have been conducting tests on some sharks in order to find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease. Protein from the sharks' brain apparently will ignite brain cells, which will help cure the disease. As one doctor said, the side effect is "the sharks got smarter." Boy, did they.

The testing facility, which is called Aquatica, looks like a ghost town set in the ocean. Samuel L. Jackson plays the rich guy in the film. He is the one funding the testing. Thomas Jane is the young stud who is a shark wrangler. Saffron Williams is the doctor who found the cure for the disease, and LL Cool J is the "preachy" chef.

You can pretty much figure out the rest. When the sharks begin to resist the experiments, the danger begins and the group is on the run to try and survive.

The tension builds after each attack in the movie. There are a few big surprises that director Harlin has for us. That's what I liked the most about the movie. It wasn't just a water logged special effects spectacle. The film was really scary. The mechanical sharks look better than cgi ones, but they still don't look that bad. Another thing I liked was that 'SEA' didn't steal too much from JAWS. It only borrows tiny bits and pieces, and it actually did a few new things. DEEP BLUE SEA isn't as good as JAWS, but it puts the sequels to absolute shame.
